Custom made Theremin

My new custom made Theremin

For a long time, I have been looking for the perfect instrument to use for my concerts. Unfortunately, most of the currently available Theremins didn't suit me completely. Luckily, one of my close friends is Thierry Frenkel, who also happens to be most brilliant genius in the Theremin world. After having spent over a year discussing my wishes, we decided in July 2011 that it would be a good time to start building a custom made instrument for me.

Around the same time Thierry introduced me to Michel Chazot, who had just built the most beautiful wooden Theremin cabinet for himself. I immediately fell in love with the classic design and asked him if he could also build one for me.

The last few months, both Michel and Thierry have worked very hard on my new Theremin. Once Michel had finished the cabinet (which is als customized because I'm 1.95m) Thierry could start fitting all his technical wonders into the wooden housing.

The result is absolutely mindblowing! This instrument has the following features:

  • The technique is hybrid (tube / transistor)
  • Two speakers on the side, left and right, to be used as a stage monitor for the conductor and/or the pianist.
  • Output for my external diamond speaker
  • LINE OUT output, to connect the instrument to external PA's in large concert halls
  • Sordino mode: this provides a 'muted' sound quality that allows you to play very softly in a very easy way.
  • Special mode with classical Theremin sound
  • Mute switch
  • On/Off indicator
  • Two open slots in top of cabinet for air circulation
  • Pitch field of over 7 octaves, with extremely linear spacing
  • Both antennas are fixed by a jack-like system
  • Volume loop with a staccato (right) and legato (left) function in one
  • Removable legs for easy transportation

It's needless to say that I'm very, very excited about the instrument. I want to thank Michel and Thierry for all their hard work and a special thank you to my father for the excellent (black) finish!
